The Art of Coming Home

I’m Aidan Barnes—an artist, a mother, a wife, and someone who finds endless joy in the simple, grounding moments of the natural world. Light moving through the trees, mountains that make me feel both rooted and untethered, the sound of water rushing over creek stones… these are the moments that shape me. My favourite days are the ones when my kids point out something beautiful in nature and say, “Mom, I feel calm when I hear the trees.” Their wonder reminds me to slow down and listen.

Before returning to painting, I spent more than ten years working in mining and biodiversity. That work taught me how landscapes function, how fragile systems can be protected, and how deeply interconnected everything truly is. Corporate life gave me structure, clarity, and a scientific way of seeing the world—one that still influences every piece I create.

But somewhere along the way, the creative hum inside me grew quiet. Life became full, loud, and busy. My role became corporate. My job became mother. And the part of me that painted slipped into the background.

I started asking what brought me true joy. The answer was simple: creating. Sharing beauty. Connecting people to the natural world in a way that feels both grounding and expansive.

So I took a leap of faith. I stepped away from a career I respected and into the unknown of making art again.

Slowly, the quiet hum returned. I began listening. Feeling. Creating. I realized that my love of nature, my scientific background, and my role as a mother weren’t separate parts of me—they were the foundation of my art.

Today, my work explores the space between what we see and what we feel. It’s an invitation to pause, breathe, and wonder what lies beyond the obvious. My journey is about coming back into frame, honouring the parts of myself that needed to be heard, and sharing that sense of connection with others.

I’m here. I’m creating. And I’m grateful you’re here with me.
